In the article, Gemma explains how a knee injury sustained whilst doing a charity trek, caused her to have to stop her training which led to dreaded weight gain.

And for women from culturally diverse regions across the planet, it is certainly no fad. It is standard practice for mums-to-be in Portugal, Spain and India to pack a corset in their hospital bag.

Married for ten years to Jonathan Crawford (40), who owns an independent supermarket in Maghera where the couple now live, she reveals she has been battling with her weight since her daughter Lucy was born…

“I am not one of those women who do a slim, sophisticated pregnancy,” she said.

“I see celebrities and even friends who put on a couple of pounds during pregnancy and then bounce back into shape the day after giving birth.

“Sadly, that’s not me. I put on about four stone with Lucy. I don’t blossom in pregnancy, I balloon.

“I was very conscious of my weight, especially around January when everyone is starting new health regimes, and I felt like I was huge, and of course most people didn’t know I had just had a baby, so I probably just looked fat to them.”
She reveals that with running around after the three little ones and keeping busy and active and joining a spin class at the Train Station Gym in Maghera, the first three stones came off easily enough, but the last stone was stubborn until she found a secret weapon.

“I was offered the chance to try a Cinch Corset by a local company. I had seen pictures of them on Facebook and in magazines and thought it sounded like a good idea and I thought – why not give it a go!”

Emma Louise, typically, embraced the challenge head-on and started wearing her especially fitted corset for seven days a week, from nine to five.

“I instantly felt better about myself. It gave me great posture and pulled me in, so I looked better, too. Also, wearing it I became very mindful of what I was eating and I started to eat much healthier food and make better choices.

“With the corset on it would feel tighter when I was full, so I would know when to stop eating. Beforehand my brain was slow to comprehend when it was time to stop eating, as I have a huge appetite and love my food.

“Friends started commenting on how well I was looking when I was wearing the corset and I knew it made a difference to my shape.”

Six weeks on and Emma Louise is delighted with the results – she has lost three inches on her waist, the stubborn extra pounds have shifted and she is down two dress sizes to a stunning size 10 again. “I am ecstatic at the success of the corset and think it has given me an hourglass figure. I am curvy and will never be super thin, but I feel so much more confident about my body shape. It accentuates my waist and my whole body shape has changed,” she reveals.

So, how does it work?

‘Improving posture and pulling in stomach muscles will make you look thinner,’ adds Jennifer. ‘In terms of losing fat long-term – that’s still down to exercise and diet.’

‘I can’t think of any contra-indications but check with a medical professional,’ says Mr Spence-Jones. ‘But it is likely to be very uncomfortable post-caesarean. Don’t ever feel pressurised into getting your figure back.’

On the Continent, packing a girdle into the hospital bag is standard practice, as Harriet Campina, 40, who lives in Portugal with her husband and two children, Amelia, seven, and Nico, 18 months, discovered when she gave birth to Nico in Portugal (Amelia was born in the UK).

‘I noticed a girl in the Portuguese hospital strapping a huge belt around her waist as she got dressed,’ she says. ‘I went straight out to buy one.”

‘It wasn’t that comfortable – but every day when I removed it, I could see that my stomach had gone down. The more it deflated, the further I tightened it.”

After six weeks, she was at a fancy-dress party in a size ten dress. ‘I thought it was incredible. It took me four years to go back to my original weight after having Amelia.’

Before you set off to jump on the waist training wagon, determine if it is for you. The easiest way to do this is to take a trial run with the Cinch Waist Training Guide.  Stick to the rules and you should start to see results in as little as seven days!

If you are starting out, choose the best latex waist trainer with good boning and an adjustable 3 hook-and-eye front closure. These three requirements are necessary for desired results.

Day One:

After breaking in your waist trainer, wear the slimming garment for just two hours the first day. This amount of time can be adjusted according to individual needs. You can opt for 2 or 3 hours during the first 3 days.


Day Two:

Wear your waist trainer for 4 hours today. If you are a beginner, be prepared to feel constricted. Your body will become accustomed to it quickly. Don’t push yourself and listen to your body – if you feel any kind of pain or pinching, remove the waist trainer.

Day Three:

Day Four:

If you’re alive, you’ve got stress. It is everywhere we go. At home, in work, in the car, in sports. It is a natural physical and mental reaction to both good and bad experiences that can be beneficial to your health and safety.

Chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms and can affect your overall health and well-being. When you get stressed, your body responds to stress by releasing hormones and increasing your heart and breathing rates. Your brain gets more oxygen, giving you an edge in responding to a problem. In the short term, stress helps you cope with tough situations. After the stressful event, your body should go back to normal on its own, but for many of us, it doesn’t and needs some help. If you don’t help it go back to normal, it takes a toll on your body, leading to chronic stress. Symptoms of chronic stress include irritability, anxiety, and depression. You may suffer from headaches or insomnia. Chronic stress is a factor in some behaviors like overeating or not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, or social withdrawal.

Unfortunately, research reveals that it’s also a fact of fat. “Even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight—or even add pounds,” says Pamela Peeke, MD, author of Body for Life for Women

Our adrenal glands govern our stress response, by secreting hormones relative to our stress levels. They actually help control many hormonal cycles and functions in our body. When the adrenal glands are overworked, the body prepares for disaster, by storing fat and calories. We crave foods, we lose precious energy, and we gain weight. So how can we keep the heavier stress load from equaling heavier bodies?


Stress busting tips:

  1. Have fun! Don’t forget that having fun, laughing, and enjoying your time is a very important way to relax! We all need to make having fun a priority, the benefits are amazing!
  2. Exercise – Our adrenals respond to stress, even if we think it is positive. Exercise is positive, and can help us reduce stress, but only if it does not make us feel tired. When we are exhausted, our adrenals are already working hard, and exercise can put added strain on them. The goal is to keep your heart rate under 90 beats per minute when working out. If you don’t regularly exercise, walking 15 minutes once or twice a day after meals, outside in fresh air, makes our adrenal glands, and our mind and body, very happy.
  3. Sleep better! Many people complain of being tired all day then having trouble sleeping at night. They are in an upside down sleep rhythm, which affects cortisol levels (released by stress), causing irregular sleep patterns. You can correct these by eating less food late in the day, turning off all technology including television, by 8 p.m., and by trying to be in bed and asleep by 10 p.m. The goal is to have at least eight hours of sleep, so our bodies can rest and regulate our hormonal cycles.
  4. Eat better! It may be easy to reach for sweets and caffeine for quick energy, but these actually backfire on us, dropping our blood sugar levels rapidly. Reaching for micronutrient-rich foods, such as lean protein, avocado, fresh fruits and vegetable, garlic, and ginger will more adequately support our ability to fight stress.


  1. Breath! Deep breaths in and out of your nose can not only slow your heart rate down, but will calm your entire body. Sometimes when we are under stress our breathing becomes shallow, and fast. It only takes three or four deep breaths to feel better. Try to remember that slowing down our breath, as well as our life, even for a few minutes, can make a big difference in reducing our stress level.

As we all frantically Google ‘weight loss’ and ‘getting fit’, we reckon we have found the perfect combination – Cinch Waist Training Corsets.

The key word to remember is “trainer” – just like when you’re working out at the gym, the idea behind a waist training corset is to train the waist through regular use, and then to maintain the shape created by the slimming corset over long periods of time.

Strive for 25 grams of fiber a day—increase intake gradually.


The probiotics in yogurt help reduce swelling and inflammation, and improve digestion. Stick with an unsweetened, lowfat Greek-style yogurt, which offers more protein and fewer refined carbs


Along with peppermint tea and ginger, fennel is a superstar when it comes to aiding digestion. It soothes the smooth muscles of the bowel, minimizing swelling. Fennel is rich in potassium and a phytonutrient called anethole, which may also reduce inflammation in the stomach and elsewhere in the body.


When you’re dehydrated, your body retains fluids, causing you to look like you’ve gained a few pounds.
